Catalytic Converter

The first step when servicing the catalytic converter for 3.0L and 4.0L engines is to place the vehicle on a hoist with NEUTRAL gear engaged. Begin by removing first the bolts and nuts coupled with gasket from the catalytic converter to muffler and tailpipe assembly and then do the same for the exhaust Y-pipe flange to catalytic converter connection. Finally remove the catalytic converter itself. Install members of an exhaust system by beginning with front components and complete installation before applying any tightening force. Efficiently clean down the mating surfaces between the exhaust Y-pipe and catalytic converter before checking for damage to these areas and the studs. There should be a cleaning procedure for the catalytic converter mating section and the muffler and tailpipe assembly that excludes damage to any surfaces. Position the exhaust Y-pipe flange-to-catalytic converter flange gasket onto established catalytic converter studs. Insert the catalytic converter into the vehicle while preventing damage to all mating surfaces between exhaust Y-pipe, catalytic converter and muffler and tailpipe as well as the catalytic converter studs before adding exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter nuts. Put the gasket for the catalytic converter-to-muffler and tailpipe attachment in place before starting construction with the loose installation of its connecting hardware. Finally, align the exhaust system.
