Bumper Cover, Rear Lower

You must remove six screws which secure the rear bumper cover of Explorer, Mountaineer and Explorer Sport Trac before installation where you should tighten them to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) torque. Before proceeding with your work start by removing the six screws that hold the rear bumper cover splash shield where three screws exist on each side. The first step entails disconnecting the license plate electrical connector then avoid twisting the bumper cover to avoid any damage because proper removal occurs by directing the outer corners outward followed by pulling the cover towards the rear until it disconnects from retaining clips. Any essential components should be moved while following the reverse sequence of removal to install the parts.

Take care not to twist the bumper cover during removal to prevent damage.

Take out the six screws for the rear bumper cover splash shield, with three screws on each side.

Remove the screws and pin-type retainers from the front fender inner splash shields, followed by the shields themselves.
