Drive Shaft

The first step to service and repair rear two-piece driveshaft begins with positioning the vehicle on a hoist while in NEUTRAL gearbox mode. You should index-mark the driveshaft at its position on the axle flange before removing and discarding the four driveshaft bolts to free the driveshaft from the axle. Support the driveshaft with mechanic's wire. The next process entails marking the driveshaft transmission flange for indexing then removing and discarding its bolts to detach the driveshaft from the transmission using mechanic's wire for support. Begin by marking the slip yoke to the output shaft followed by removing the bolts of the center bearing support while pulling out the driveshaft assembly. Use a cleaning solution to eliminate all deposits, dirt and rust present on the driveshaft flange yoke sections as well as all driveshaft slip yoke openings. The examination of the driveshaft slip yoke boot should be followed by a replacement when holes or rips are detected. The drive shaft center bearing support must be inspected for signs of wear and rough motion; a new support is required if these faults exist. Assess the center bearing rubber insulator for signs of deterioration since you should replace it if it shows cracks, hardening or deterioration. Use grease on the spline of the slip yoke before installing the driveshaft by following the index marks made during removal while using fresh bolts and retainers. The installation completion involves following the steps of reverse removal sequence.

For manual transmissions, remove it entirely; for automatic transmissions, lower and slide it rearward off the output shaft.
