    Q:
How to Service and Repair the Rear Drive Shaft for 4x2 with 137-Inch and 141-Inch Wheelbases on Ford Excursion? Posted by Customer
    A:
A technician must start rear driveshaft service and repair operations for 4x2 vehicles with 137-inch and 141-inch wheelbases by elevating and properly supporting the vehicle. Automatic transmission vehicles need maintenance of the output shaft while marking the driveshaft and transmission extension housing in their initial position. For manual transmission vehicles, index-mark the driveshaft yoke and transmission flange. The four bolts and two U-joint retainers need removal from all vehicles apart from Excursion after marking indexing the driveshaft and rear axle pinion flange. Before discarding the four bolts on the Excursion officials need to mark the positions of the driveshaft yoke and rear axle pinion flange. The installation requires disconnection of the driveshaft from the rear axle pinion flange through driveshaft removal from the vehicle for manual transmission and through sliding the automatic transmission output shaft driveshaft rearward for automatic transmission. Secure the bearing cups onto the spider with tape to prevent them from falling while you should block the automatic transmission extension housing to stop fluid leakage. Excursion owners should.disconnect the driveshaft yoke from the rear axle pinion flange by using the recommended tool rather than using a hammer. Apply Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B compatible Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C to the slip-yoke spline before you slide the driveshaft slip-yoke onto the transmission output shaft or onto the transmission flange between automatic transmission and manual transmission vehicles. Keep the tape on the bearing cups only in vehicles other than Excursion while installing the bearing cups into the rear axle pinion flange. Also normalize verbalization when possible. Install four new bolts loosely on the rear axle pinion flange after placing the driveshaft yoke there for the Excursion vehicle. The installation of new bolts for manual transmission vehicles requires loose installation of four new bolts whereas all vehicles except Excursion need two new retainers and four new bolts. To properly situate the driveshaft yoke on the flange during Excursion installation users should distribute bolt tension across several passes in a crosswise fashion. Lower the vehicle then tighten the four bolts which apply to manual transmission vehicles.
