The second step for servicing and repairing the rack and pinion on vehicles with rear-wheel drive involves initial front wheel and tire removal. Place the steering wheel in a direct position before you extract the ignition key and lock the wheel into its current state. The power steering fluid cooler has to be taken off in models which come with a 4.0L engine. Guide tightness to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) for the newly installed nuts before inserting new cotter pins. Make sure to protect the tie-rod boot during usage of the Tie-Rod End Remover before peeling the outer tie-rod ends from wheel spindles. Remove the adapter from the ball end then coat the tie-rod end stud and ball end of the remover with grease. Disconnection of the lower steering column shaft from the rack and pinion requires no column rotation because it can damage the Clock Spring; any column rotation requires a Clock Spring removal and recentering process. Install a fresh bolt to connect the lower steering column shaft with the rack and pinion while tightening it to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). Discard the old bolt. To disconnect the pressure and return lines you must first remove the steering line clamp plate nut and discard its O-ring seals after which new connections should be tightened to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft). Prevent dirt infiltration of the system by plugging or capping all rack and pinion ports alongside the pressure line and return line. Building up force on the rack and pinion studs protects the fluid tubes from damage then you can pull out the two rack and pinion nuts keeping the new nuts tightened to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft). In case removal is required, proceed by taking out the outer tie-rod ends. New O-ring seals demand installation when disconnecting power steering lines to stop fluid leakages. The power steering system must be properly filled during installation plus front toe adjustments must be performed when needed.
