As the first step to service and repair brake shoes start with brake drum removal for inspecting the rear brake assembly to check for excessive wheel cylinder leakage and shoe and lining contamination alongside checking the minimum thickness above the backing plate or rivets and heat discoloration of springs as well as the adjusting lever contact to the brake adjuster screw. Write down the positions of the retracting brake shoe springs before removing both the short and the long springs. The maintenance sequence begins with breaking the connection between the brake shoe adjusting lever cable and lever while you uninstall the cable guide followed by the adjusting lever return spring and lever and screw spring and brake adjuster screw assembly. Replace brake shoe anchor pin guide plate, parking brake strut and parking brake lever pin retainer with the rear brake shoes as well as linings including installation of brake shoe hold-down springs and spring pins. The installation begins with cleaning and lubricating the brake backing plate using Silicone Brake Caliper Grease alongside Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A (Motorcraft WA-10) or an equivalent silicone compound that satisfies Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A. Afterward, connect the parking brake lever to the rear brake shoe and lining before installing the rear brake shoes and linings and securing them through brake shoe hold-down spring pins and springs. After installing the parking brake spring retainer the operator must place the parking brake strut together with the parking brake link spring followed by installation of the brake shoe anchor pin guide plate. The correct positioning of the brake shoe adjusting lever cable must be ensured before installing the short brake shoe retracting spring along with the long brake shoe retracting spring and the cable guide. The assembly process includes removing brake adjuster screws from the screw assembly. Install silicone grease and place screws back together while making sure each screw has an R or L stamp marking on its socket end. Install the brake adjuster screw assembly followed by the brake shoe adjusting screw spring within its appropriate position then place the brake shoe adjusting lever together with all its components. The automatic self-adjuster operation can be tested by pulling the brake shoe adjusting lever cable to verify brake shoe adjuster assembly rotation and next notch advancement after release. Brake adjustment should follow before reinstallation of the brake drum.

Start brake shoe service by complete operation of the parking brake control system. Visual inspection of the rear brake assembly requires observation of wheel cylinder leakage together with brake shoe and lining condition and minimum dimensions above the backing plate or rivets and an examination of brake shoe springs for temperature discoloration. The service requires replacing defective components. Beginning with the brake shoe retracting springs and following with the evaluation of the adjusting screw assembly requires duplex cable removal from the brake shoe adjusting lever cable followed by separating the cable guide removing both the adjusting lever return spring and brake shoe adjusting lever. The removal procedure includes plate anchors for brake shoe anchor pins together with parking brake strut and hold-down springs before proceeding to eliminate rear brake shoes and linings. Keep in mind to remove brake shoe hold-down spring pins. You should disconnect the parking brake lever by pulling the parking brake cable spring into its extended position. To mount the lever simply spring the parking brake cable before connecting the parking brake lever. Apply silicone brake caliper grease on the brake backing plate for cleaning and lubrication. After positioning the brake shoes with their linings users should install the parking brake lever followed by applying the brake shoe hold-down pins then installing their springs. Install the parking brake strut by making sure the parking brake link spring takes its proper position. Position the brake shoe adjusting lever cable according to standards before placing the short brake shoe retracting spring. Put the long brake shoe retracting spring in its proper position. The brake adjuster screw assembly needs silicone brake caliper grease on threads before screw installation into the adjusting screw nut followed by screw tightening by half a turn. Put the brake adjuster screw assembly in its proper place followed by inserting the brake shoe adjusting screw spring. Then position the brake shoe adjusting lever with its cable. Check the automatic self-adjuster operation through cable manipulation of the brake shoe adjusting lever which controls brake shoe adjuster assembly rotation. Also verify the lever moves up to its next position after releasing the cable. End the procedure by adjusting the brakes before installing the brake drum.

Replace them as needed.
