    Q:
What Are the Crucial Steps to Follow When Repairing the Rack and Pinion in the Power Steering System on Ford Flex? Posted by Customer
    A:
The success of repairing power steering components depends on blocking foreign material entry during the process. Initiate the procedure by putting the steering wheel into place using Hunter(R) 28-75-1 tool in the straight-ahead position. You should use the hex-holding feature to stop the stud from turning before you remove the two tie-rod end nuts and separate the tie-rod ends from the wheel knuckles. After installation, tighten new nuts to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft). Tear the pressure line bracket-to-rack and pinion bolt yet tighten a new bolt while installation to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft). New O-ring seals must be installed during power steering line disconnections because proper sequencing will stop fluid from leaking. When removing the power steering line clamp plate bolt, workers must rotate the clamp plate before discarding both O-ring seals and replacing them with new ones, securing them with 23 Nm (17 lb-ft) torque. Prevent the lower shaft of the steering column shaft from rotation during disconnection to protect the Clock Spring because rotating the shaft will require Clock Spring removal for recentering. The process for installing a new bolt requires disconnecting the steering column shaft-to-rack and pinion bolt and tossing the old hardware while torquing the new bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Set the stabilizer bar and links in an upward position after discarding the two upper nuts, then install these new nuts with torque to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). The installation of new bolts to stabilize bar brackets requires 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) torque on each bolt for all-wheel drive vehicles while positioning the bar and links in an upward direction. Before extraction of the rack and pinion from the left side of the vehicle, remove its two nuts and bolts and heat shield-to-subframe pushpin but maintain the rack and pinion nuts for later installation by tightening them to 117 Nm (86 lb-ft). Reverse the procedure by installing the power steering system while checking to see if front toe adjustment is needed.
