Passenger Air Bag, Upper

Keeping protective eyewear and handling the module by pointing its deployment door/trim cover/tear seam in a direction away from the body remains mandatory to prevent serious injuries. Every air bag module requires new components rather than paint restoration because properly functioning deployment depends on new parts. Additionally keep all electrical connectors on air bags safe from probing. When the ignition switch turns ON the air bag warning indicator becomes visible because the restraints control module (RCM) fuse has been extracted from its socket. This condition is normal and does not point to any system faults. The vehicle must return to customers only when you verify that the supplemental restraint system functions correctly and has no failures. Start depowering the SRS system then drop the glove compartment open while detaching it from the instrument panel and removing the dampener if it exists. First cut off the 5 clips holding the right-hand-side instrument panel finish panel and unscrew the left-hand-side duct bracket holding screw to extract the left-hand-side and right-hand-side duct assemblies from the glove compartment entry via an ongoing route. The process requires removing four bolts that secure the passenger air bag module support bracket together with the three nuts from the passenger air bag module. Avoid hanging the module from the wiring harness while you carefully lower it down the mounting studs. Use a small screwdriver to release locking buttons from the LH and RH electrical connectors yet avoid pulling out the buttons through the locks because it could cause damage to the components. Take out the passenger air bag module from the glove compartment opening. Place the module onto the cross vehicle beam while unlocking the locking buttons and join the electrical connectors without applying force. The instrument panel requires installation of the 3 nuts with 7 Nm (62 lb-in) torque setting after raising the module onto the mounting studs with all 7 hooks seated properly. Secure the passenger air bag module support bracket while torquing its bolts to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). After that install screws to fasten the LH and RH duct assemblies along with the LH duct assembly bracket. To finish the procedure secure the RH instrument panel finish panel before closing the glove compartment door and installing the dampener (if equipped) as you repower the SRS system.

Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON, reinstall RCM fuse 46 (7.5A), and the lower kick panel fuse cover.

Remove the passenger air bag module from the glove compartment opening.

Reinstall the RH and LH duct assemblies and the LH duct assembly bracket screw. Ensure the RH instrument panel finish panel's 5 retaining clips are fully seated, then install it and close the glove compartment door, reattaching the dampener if equipped. Finally, repower the system.
