Start service and repair of the muffler and tailpipe by placing the vehicle in NEUTRAL gear and hoisting it up. The exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts as well as flag nuts and gasket need removal from vehicles with 2.3L engines. The service requires tooling bolts and flag nuts as well as a gasket removal from the exhaust Y-pipe assembly-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly of vehicles with 3.0L or 4.0L engines. Free the three rubber isolators through disconnection and pull out both the muffler and tailpipe assembly. Fasten the exhaust system only after aligning and installing everything starting from the vehicle front end. Apply only non-oil petroleum or grease lubricants to the isolators to stop rubber deterioration which leads to exhaust hanger bracket separation. Thoroughly clean both mating surfaces of exhaust downpipe or catalytic converter while protecting them from any form of damage. Install the muffler and tailpipe assembly into the vehicle while attaching all three rubber isolators. The 2.3L vehicles require the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly gasket installed before the appropriate bolts and nuts are loosely connected. You should install the exhaust Y-pipe assembly-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly gasket first before loosely installing the corresponding bolts and nuts for all 3.0L and 4.0L vehicles. Finally, align the exhaust system.

Avoid using oil or grease-based lubricants to prevent rubber deterioration and potential separation from the exhaust hanger bracket.

Remove the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts and nuts.
