Shift Control Cable

The first step for servicing and repairing the floor shift interlock cable includes removing the PRNDL trim plate through a lift motion. A small flat-blade screwdriver can lift the bezel of the shift knob to remove it. First detach both screws which anchor the shift lever knob before extracting the knob and pulling out the knob button. Starting with the top of the selector handle, remove its spring as you put the window regulator control panel to the side. For the console finish panel removal, first disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission selector arm while dismantling the panel by unscrewing it. Follow this procedure to remove the left side console access panel after taking out the shift cable retaining clip from the floor shift mechanism through the access panel. Insert both the rubber grommet along with the shift cable into the floor panel opening. Clamp the vehicle to a hoist at NEUTRAL position before you disconnect the shift cable from the automatic transmission and detach the shift cable bracket from the transmission by unscrewing its bolts. The installation process requires performing the removal steps in reverse order with proper adjustment of the shift cable.

The procedure to repair or service the floor shift shift cable and bracket requires selecting NEUTRAL position of the vehicle while using a hoist to support it. Lift out the floor shift PRNDL trim plate before setting the window regulator control panel to the side. The console finish panel screws need removal to disconnect the shift cable from the transmission selector arm. The service starts with console access panel removal from the left side before extracting the retaining clip from the floor shift mechanism through this panel opening. Drill the rubber grommet together with the shift cable through the floor panel before freeing the shift cable from automatic transmission connections. The transmission needs the shift cable bracket bolt removal before bracket installation where the torque must reach 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Reader should perform a reverse order of the removal steps to mount new parts and properly calibrate the shift cable.

Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual control lever, then carefully pry behind the transmission shift cable lock tab to release it from the bracket.

Avoid applying force to the transmission shift cable assembly between the steering column transmission selector lever arm and the steering column bracket.
