    Q:
How to Service and Repair the Floor Shift Cable and Bracket on Ford Crown Victoria? Posted by Customer
    A:
The first step when servicing or repairing the floor shift shift cable with bracket demands the disconnection of electric power to air springs because unexpected air spring inflation or deflation might trigger vehicle movement during repairs. A fire suppression system present requires the system to be depowered. To start the process hoist the vehicle to neutrality and then remove the nut that connects the shift cable to transmission and disconnect the cable from the manual control lever and shift cable bracket. First eliminate the shift cable retainer after you disengage the cable from upward routing clips then take out the bolts which bind the shift cable bracket to the transmission. First, detach the cable from its routing clip on the bulkhead while sliding the rubber grommet through that opening then cut the tie wrap securing it to the wiring harness. Start by taking out the instrument panel finish panel along with disconnecting its electrical connector before lifting the console finish panel and getting it out of the way. The shift indicator bezel needs to be raised up to free the bulb while you disconnect the shift cable from the shifter mechanism so the housing clip can be released before cable extraction from the vehicle. To install the new shift cable start by passing it through the bulkhead opening and sitting the rubber grommet into position. Route the shifter end to attach with the floor console mounted selector lever where locking tabs secure in position while the cable end fits onto the ball stud. After securing the cable to the instrument panel wiring harness and setting the selector lever in (D) position reinstall all components that include the bulb, bezel then finish panel and instrument panel finish panel before reconnecting the electrical connector. Fix the shift cable at the bulkhead routing clip before placing the shift cable bracket into position and tightening bolts to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). Install a new shift cable retainer and connect the cable to the shift cable bracket while clipping it into upward routing areas. Cable adjustments for the shift cable must be performed but additional steps are required for vehicles with fire suppression systems to repower them. When the vehicle sits on the ground and all adjustments finish the system operator should enable the electrical power for air suspension if it exists.

    Q:
How to Service and Repair the Floor Shift Cable and Bracket on Mercury Grand Marquis? Posted by Customer
    A:
The first step to service or repair the floor shift shift cable and bracket requires turning off the air suspension electrical power to stop unwanted air spring inflation or deflation which threatens vehicle shuffling that leads to severe personal injuries. Turn off the air suspension switch when possible or if it applies to your work area. Set the transmission to NEUTRAL position and raise the vehicle before disconnecting the shift cable by removing the nut which connects the cable to manual control lever and shift cable bracket. First remove the shift cable retainer before unclasping the cable from its routing by the transmission with an upward route leading to the engine compartment. Then separate the bolts from the transmission that secure the shift cable bracket. Use a suitable tool to push the bulkhead rubber grommet before removing the tie wrap holding the wire to the instrument panel harness. The instrument panel finish panel should be taken off before disconnecting its electrical connector while the console finish panel needs lifting before removal. Pull up the shift indicator bezel and disconnect the shift cable from the shifter mechanism after removing the bulb while freeing the shift cable housing clip for cable removal from the vehicle. The new shift cable needs to pass through the bulkhead opening where the rubber grommet should settle into place. Secure the locking tabs on the shift console which rests on the floor before snapping the cable end onto the ball stud. Insert the cable into the bracket so it snaps into place and verify the lock mechanism by pulling it back. The procedure involves installing the shift cable housing retainer while connecting the cable to the shift lever which gets secured to the instrument panel wiring harness. Begin by placing the shift lever at position (D) and installing the bulb followed by bezel. After that install the console finish panel before reconnecting electrical components and finally placing the instrument panel finish panel. The shift cable must first be attached to its routing clip that routes toward the bulkhead before installing the shift cable bracket and securing its bolts at 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). Install the new shift cable retainer before attaching the shift cable to the shift cable bracket then fasten it to the upward routing clips. When needed adjust the shift cable and if the vehicle has a fire suppression system repower it while strictly following all safety warnings and procedures. After finishing all adjustments on a ground-level vehicle you should apply electrical power to the air suspension system.
