    Q:
How to service and repair the shock absorber on Lincoln Continental? Posted by Customer
    A:
The initial repair service of a shock absorber needs vehicle power off for the air suspension system to avoid sudden air spring changes. The first step requires removal of the side trim panel from the trunk while also discarding the mass damper retaining clip. Lift the vehicle onto a hoist and eliminate the tire assembly together with its wheel. You must reduce air pressure from the spring before moving ahead since trying to remove a pressurized air spring can endanger your safety. The technician must perform a disconnection procedure of shock absorber electrical connectors and wiring routing retaining clips whenever they exist. The shock absorber installation process begins by removing the first two upper shock absorber bolts followed by separate removal of the lower shock mounting nut and bolt which allows extraction of the shock absorber assembly together with mounting bracket and mass damper unit. The first step for installation requires fitting the rear shock absorber mounting bracket together with the mass damper. Stroking the shock absorber several times with it in an upright position removes air from the working cylinder while ensuring the electronic actuator points toward the rear of the vehicle. The shock absorber needs to be passed through the shock tower hole before you compress it and align the mounting clevis to the wheel spindle. Then mount the lower shock absorber bolt followed by the upper bolt pair. Before continuing you should reconnect the shock absorber electrical connector followed by application of wiring retaining clips onto the lower arm. After lowering the vehicle and turning on the air suspension service switch, reinstall both wheel and tire assembly while completing the procedure by placing back the side trim panels.
