The first task when servicing or repairing the steering wheel involves disconnecting the battery ground cable for one minute to let the restraint system back up power supply run out. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) needs to be deactivated through proper procedures and the driver must remove the access cover using a screwdriver with a thin blade. After disconnecting the accessory and air bag module wiring users must avoid wire or connector damage while steering wheel removal from column shaft panel through a little opening in the steering wheel back. Service of the driver air bag soft pack together with the steering wheel needs to occur as an entire assembly whenever an air bag deployment occurs. The pinion shaft needs to be turned 120 to 130 revolutions until the steering wheel becomes detached from the column shaft. The return process using a prepaid card follows installation of a new steering wheel-air bag assembly, steering wheel or air bag. This process requires recording the serial numbers and vehicle ID and sending them to Ford Motor Company no matter if only the steering wheel needs replacement. The installation consists of performing the exact opposite steps to removal while guiding the Clock Spring wiring through the small steeting wheel opening then connecting the accessory and the air bag module wiring. The Supplemental Restraint System requires activation according to all provided warnings and cautions to prevent severe injury.
