- Q: How to remove and replace the axle shaft assembly on a 7.5-inch ring gear rear drive axle/differential on 2009 Ford Ranger?A: Position vehicle on hoist with transmission in neutral. Remove wheel and tire, differential cover and drain lubricant. Remove rear brake drums and pinion shaft, push axle shafts inboard, remove U-washers and withdraw axle shafts. Reinstall lubricated seals, U-washers, pinion shaft with new lock bolt, refit cover, refill lubricant, reinstall wheels.
