2000 Ford E-250 Econoline Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the 8.8-Inch Ring Gear axle shaft on 2000 Ford E-250 Econoline?
A: Start service or repair of the Ford 8.8-Inch Ring Gear axle shaft by raising the vehicle and supporting it before removing the rear tire assembly and wheel. Start by removing the differential housing cover then drain the lubricating fluid before removing the brake drum. You should remove the differential pinion shaft once you discard the lock bolt and pull out the shaft. The rubber O-ring inside the axle shaft requires special care when handling the U-washer. The axle shaft should be pushed inward to achieve this. You should take out the axle shaft while maintaining the integrity of the wheel bearing oil seal. Use Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or equivalent material complying with Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B to lubricate the wheel bearing oil seal before installing the axle shaft without causing damage to the oil seal. Guided by the U-washer the axle shaft should be aligned with the button end before stretching it outward to secure the installation. New pinion shaft lock bolts should be used unless unavailable where the threads require treatment with Threadlock@ and Sealer E0AZ-19554-AA or an equivalent that complies with WSK-M2G351-A5 Ford specification before performing differential pinion shaft installation. Thread alignment with the case lock bolt hole must occur before tightening a new lock bolt. Put the brake drum along with the differential housing cover in place while adding 2.37 liters (5 pints) of Motorcraft Synthetic Rear Axle Lubricant F1TZ-19580-B or an equivalent that meets Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A into the rear axle housing. To achieve correct metal-to-metal contact you should thoroughly clean all surfaces on the wheel hub or brake drum mounting area before placing the rear wheel and tire assembly in position.
