2000 Ford Expedition Brake Caliper Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair a brake caliper on 2000 Ford Expedition?
A: Begin service and repair of the brake caliper with removal of disc brake caliper units and subsequent draining of brake fluid. The caliper needs to stay in a vise while the caliper pistons can be removed by inserting wood between the caliper bridge and pistons then applying low air pressure to the fluid port until the pistons push against the wood block. Remove the block and take out pistons before discarding the piston seals and boots while avoiding any honing of cylinder bores since pistons are not available for honed bores. Replace the caliper if the bores show excessive scoring or corrosion. When installing components avoid using any brake fluid that has drained from the system and prevent utilization of piston seals and dust boots that have been previously used. Additionally during assembly avoid using brake fluid that remains in open containers over a long duration. Use high performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid C6AZ-19542-AB or an equivalent fluid that fulfills Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A to lubricate the caliper piston as well as piston boot and piston seal and cylinder bore. Insert the caliper piston with caution while keeping it from cocking position before applying pressure that will allow installation of the disc brake caliper.
