How to service and repair the automatic transmission shifter on 2000 Ford Ranger?

In order to work on the automatic transmission shifter, disconnect the ignition switch, upper steering column shroud and rubber shift lever cover. Unplug the shift control harness, remove the pin of the gearshift lever, and then remove the gearshift lever. Installation and de-installation follow this order: insert a pin, and take it out in reverse order.
