2001 Ford Crown Victoria Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2001 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: Begin repair or servicing of the timing cover by disconnecting the battery ground cable while removing both valve covers and the water pump. Position the power steering pump aside by removing the bolts after you raise and support the vehicle. You should drain engine oil from the pan using its drain plug while removing four additional bolts. First lower the vehicle to remove the crankshaft front seal before taking out the bolt that holds the belt idler pulley and all accompanying bolts and stud bolts. Safely detach the engine front cover while removing its components from the front-cover-to-cylinder-block dowel. The installation requires cleaning of the sealing area with metal surface cleaner when the engine front cover remains unsecured for more than four minutes. Silicone needs to be applied on two areas: the circular connection between the cylinder head and block and the oil pan and cylinder block interface. Install the engine front cover on the dowel but keep its bolts loose. The front cover and stud bolt installation requires a two-stage process where first secure bolts 1 through 5 to 20 - 30 Nm (15 - 22 ft. lbs.) then move to tightening bolts 6 through 15 to 40 - 55 Nm (29 - 40 ft. lbs.). The first step is positioning the belt idler pulley before installing its bolt then installing a new engine front cover front oil seal. Support the vehicle while raising it again and install front oil pan bolts lightly at first with a torque of 20 Nm and follow up by turning them an extra 60 degrees. The front lower hole of the power steering pump stands empty therefore properly place the power steering pump before bolting it. After reattaching the oil pan drain plug, remove the vehicle support to replace the valve covers with the water pump. Reinstall the ground cable on the battery while filling oil into the engine.
