- Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2002 Ford Crown Victoria?A: The timing cover service requires disconnecting the battery ground cable before removing valve covers and the water pump. You must first support and lift the vehicle before taking out its power steering bolts to move the pump to the side. Maintenance starts with draining engine oil through the removal of the oil pan drain plug then continuing with removal of four bolts. The service begins by lowering the vehicle to remove the crankshaft front seal followed by removing the bolt used for the belt idler pulley and its connecting bolts and stud bolts. Disconnect the engine front cover from its connecting position with the front cover-to-cylinder block dowel. The installation of the engine front cover requires immediate attention because failing to secure it within four minutes needs cleaning of the sealing area and drying with metal surface cleaner. Beginning with the cylinder head-to-block surface apply silicone material and following this coat the oil pan-to-cylinder block surface. Place the engine front cover on its dowel pins then screw on bolts with minimum tightness. The front cover and stud bolts need two-step installation where you torque fasteners 1 through 7 to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) first followed by tightness of fasteners 6 through 15 to 40 - 55 Nm (29 - 40 ft. lbs.). Lift the vehicle once more then partially install the front oil pan bolts followed by two-stage bolt-tightening at 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) first and an additional 60 degrees afterward. Skip using the front bottom-most hole on the power steering pump and properly place its location before securing the bolts. Follow this step by reattaching the oil pan drain plug while lowering the vehicle before installing both valve covers and water pump. The last procedure includes the reinstallation of the battery ground cable while performing engine oil drainage.
