2001 Ford Excursion Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Can You Safely Depower and Repower the Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2001 Ford Excursion?
A: The appropriate method of Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) depowering and repowering requires you to wear safety glasses before working with air bag modules because accidental deployment presents a risk for injury. Probing the connectors on air bag modules should never be attempted since it may result in deployment which leads to personal injuries. The servicing procedure for a seat with SRS components first requires electronics to be turned off. A continuous illumination of the air bag warning lamp suggests normal operation when the RCM fuse F23 (10A) is absent and the ignition is activated. The first step requires vehicle users to disable all vehicle accessories and switch off the ignition. The central junction box cover needs removal from below the instrument panel left side to access the ECS or RCM fuse F23. The air bag indicator requires at least 30 seconds of observation during which period it should stay continuously lit if you remove the correct fuse. Proper confirmation requires switching off the ignition power. The back up power supply needs depletion through a one-minute battery ground cable (14301) disconnection process that requires disconnecting any auxiliary batteries and power supplies as well. The repowering process must include the removal of diagnostic tools from all restraint system interfaces and the correct connection of SRS components. The vehicle ignition needs to be positioned to ON instead of OFF after reinserting the ECS or RCM fuse F23 into the CJB and putting the cover back into place. It is crucial to check that both the vehicle compartment and air bag modules are clear before the ground cable should be installed. To prove out the SRS system turn the ignition key from ON to OFF position while waiting for 10 seconds before setting the key to return to the ON position. The air bag indicator should remain lit continuously for six seconds before it automatically turns off the lamp. A fault in the system may cause the indicator to fail to turn on or it may stay on continuously or it may flash while producing possible fault-related chimes. The SRS must receive fault diagnosis along with needed repairs and maintenance teams need to clear all continuous DTCs from the restraints control module through a scan tool.
