2000 Ford Excursion Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Safely Arm and Disarm an Air Bag in the Supplemental Restraint System on 2000 Ford Excursion?
A: Safe handling of an air bag module requires protective safety glasses for minimizing potential injuries that could result from accidental air bag deployment. The connectors of the air bag module must not be probed due to potential deployment that leads to personal injuries. Do not use memory saver devices since removing the ECS module fuse along with an ON ignition switch must lead to air bag warning lamp illumination yet it represents a normal condition without fault indication. The SRS system needs to be faultless and operation-ready before the vehicle can be released. Use the beginning of this process to disable every vehicle accessory and gearbox ignition system. Open both ECS module fuse F22 (10A) from CJB and fuse F2 (10A) from the battery junction box. Check the air bag indicator continuously during a minimum 30-second ignition ON period because the indicator should glow persistently after removing the proper RCM fuse. Continue the test procedure only when the correct RCM fuse reveals an ON air bag indicator. Before adding or removing the ground cable (14301) disconnect the battery power for at least one minute while keeping any auxiliary batteries inactive. The restraint system repowering process requires the removal of all diagnostic tools and proper connection of all SRS components. Reinstall both ECS module fuse F22 (10A) located in CJB and fuse F2 in BJB before connecting the battery ground cable after turning ignition from OFF to ON. The SRS verification process requires first turning the key to OFF position then waiting 10 seconds before resetting the key to the ON position. When the ignition turns from Off to On the air bag indicator will stay illuminated continuously for approximately six seconds while it turns off. The indicator shows various warning signals depending on a possible fault state which could be either non-lights up during warning periods, persistently stays active or flashes with auditory warnings indicating system problems. Any faults in the SRS system need immediate diagnosis followed by repair work while continuous DTCs present in the restraints control module can be removed through a scan tool.
