2001 Ford F-350 Super Duty Brake Booster Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the hydraulic brake booster, specifically the Hydro-Boost system on 2001 Ford F-350 Super Duty?
A: Safety precautions with proper procedures must be followed when repairing the Hydro-Boost system since the power brake booster cannot sustain weight from the accumulator and the booster must always be kept away from the accumulator. Proper seating of the accumulator snap ring must be checked before use because the device holds hazardous high-pressure nitrogen gas that needs proper caution during handling. The proper method to dispose of the accumulator includes heat avoidance while using safety glasses to punch a 1.6 millimeter (1/16-inch) diameter opening at the end to release gas pressure. Turning off the engine first requires users to stroke the brake pedal several times to eliminate the accumulator pressure before disconnecting the battery ground cable followed by removing the left side battery when applicable. Start by taking out both the air cleaner housing together with the brake pressure switch electrical connection. The first step for F-Series vehicles is disconnection of power steering pressure hoses and power steering return line hose then removing three power steering line clamp bolts. Motorhome vehicles need connecting power steering hoses before removal. First soak off the brake master cylinder nuts then detach the power steering hose mounting bracket along with master cylinder itself before setting everything to the side. Take out the instrument panel steering column opening cover and the self-locking pin together with the Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch and brake booster push rod from the brake pedal pin. Pull out the power brake booster after dismounting its attaching nuts. The installation method requires you to follow the removal steps in reverse order while adding new O-ring seals to power steering pressure fittings then conduct a bleed procedure on the hydro-boost system.
