2001 Lincoln Continental Automatic Transmission Shift Levers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Automatic Transmission Shift Levers for the Transaxle Range in a Column Shift on 2001 Lincoln Continental?
A: The repair process for the automatic transmission shift levers starts with removing the key release lever before taking out the ignition switch lock cylinder. The next step requires removal of lower instrument panel screws while getting rid of both steering column shrouds upper and lower. The first step includes the removal of the steering column opening weather seal followed by taking out the three components: transaxle range automatic transmission shift lever pin, transaxle range automatic transmission shift lever, and transaxle range automatic transmission shift lever clip. The transaxle range automatic transmission shift lever clip needs installation first. Position the steering column opening weather seal on top of the transaxle range automatic transmission shift lever before you fasten the automatic transmission shift lever into its slot. Use the automatic transmission shift lever pin to tap against the transmission column shift selector tube until the head rests against its surface while keeping the Tinnerman nut free to view from below. Place the steering column opening weather seal and reinstall it before both upper and lower steering column shrouds. To complete the procedure fasten the lower instrument panel cover with screws while also reinstalling the ignition switch lock cylinder followed by securing the key release lever.
