2001 Lincoln Town Car Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the shift cable on 2001 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The first step for servicing or repairing the shift cable requires turning off the air suspension electrical power to avoid unexpected air spring inflation or deflation which may cause vehicle shifting during operations thus creating potential injury risks. First raise and support the vehicle followed by removing the shift cable from the transmission while taking off the nut and disconnecting it from the manual control lever. The shift cable bracket needs its own connector removed so you can discard the shift cable retainer. The shift cable must be unclipped from its routing clips that direct it toward the engine compartment before you remove the transmission bolts to take away the shift cable bracket. The shift cable needs to be lowered while you disconnect it from the bulkhead-side routing clip. Remove the shift cable first from the steering column then from the transmission selector lever arm and support before the steering column bracket. Keep the shift cable retainer. Through bulkhead insertion use a proper instrument to guide the rubber grommet before removing the shift cable from the automobile. When installing the new shift cable insert it through the bulkhead aperture so it can drop down toward the transmission where the rubber grommet can locate in the opening. Secure the shift cable to the steering column bracket while installing a new retainer before attaching it to the transmission selector lever arm together with its support. After setting the gearshift lever in the (OD) position you will need to suspend a weight of 1.4 kg (3 lb.). After routing the shift cable clip toward the bulkhead through the engine compartment turn the electrical air suspension power supply back on. Perform a second vehicle lift while placing the shift cable bracket correctly before securing the bolts. Contact the shift cable to its bracket before connecting it to the manual lever and install a fresh cable retainer and position the cable along its clips toward the engine bay. The entire service process must finish before enabling the electrical power supply to the air suspension system provided your vehicle has this feature while it rests on the ground.
