2002 Lincoln Town Car Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the shift cable on 2002 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The first step to service or repair the shift cable is to disconnect power to the air suspension because unexpected air spring deflation or inflation could make the vehicle shift unexpectedly and cause harm to the operator. Raising the vehicle before proceeding to detach the shift cable from the transmission. Begin the cable service by removing the nut before detaching the manual control lever to the shift cable bracket and shifting the cable retainer off. Remove the transmission-based clips from the shift cable and direct it toward the engine area. Afterwards uninstall the transmission bracket retaining bolts followed by the removal of the shift cable bracket. Lower the vehicle while unclipping the shift cable that leads toward the bulkhead. The technician must disconnect the shift cable from the steering column together with the transmission selector lever arm and support and steering column bracket before discarding the shift cable retainer. A suitable tool should help push the bulkhead rubber grommet before completely removing the shift cable from the vehicle. When installing the shift cable you should pass it into the bulkhead area which leads to your transmission while you let the rubber grommet take its proper seat. Follow the connection sequence by mounting the shift cable to the steering column then adding another shift cable retainer before binding these elements to both columns and transmission selector components. Before you proceed put the gearshift lever to position D and suspend a weight of 1.4 kg (3 lbs.) from it. Secure the shift cable to its clips with the route oriented toward the bulkhead while you raise and support the vehicle again. Position the shift cable bracket then install bolts to connect the shift cable to the bracket but leave out the manual control lever at the moment. Attach a new shift cable retainer then link the shift cable to the shift cable bracket before fastening the shift cable to its clips for an upward direction toward the engine area. Six check with the power and finish adjusting before you enable the air suspension power if you have it while the car remains on the ground.
