How to service and repair a brake caliper on 2001 Mercury Cougar?

Servicing and repairing a brake caliper starts by following the removal process. Prepare a block of wood or shop rags that should lie between the caliper piston and the caliper housing to stop piston damage. Compressed air should be used to draw out the caliper piston from its position inside the caliper housing which will then allow removal of the caliper piston. Check for damage and pitting on the caliper piston along with the piston bore and replace the piston when necessary. Throw away both the dust seal and piston seal before starting the inspection. To assemble the caliper piston and bore one must first use High Performance Dot 3 Brake Fluid C6AZ-19542-AB or a Ford ESA-M6C25-A DOT 3 equivalent to lubricate the components. Then install a new piston seal inside the piston bore machining groove followed by fitting a new caliber dust seal onto the piston. Place the caliper piston into the caliper bore with caution to avoid damaging or scratching it before distracting the dust seal then putting in the caliper unit.
