How to Service and Repair the Rear Seat Belt and Retractor on 2001 Mercury Cougar?

Start the repair and servicing of the rear seat belt and retractor by removing the rear quarter panel. Unfasten the lower seat belt anchor together with the upper seat belt anchor by starting with the cover removal followed by Torx bolt removal. Lower the rear seat backrest until you can access the rear seat backrest release cover for removal to disconnect the release component from the structure of the body. The seat belt webbing needs to be detached from the C-pillar trim panel as the technician removes the seat belt retractor by unscrewing its bolt while gently lifting the retractor for the locating tangs to release. The seat belt assembly becomes removable after passing the seat belt webbing through an opening over the seat backrest latch mounting point. To reinstall the parts you should execute the removal steps in reverse order.
