- Q: How to Safely Depower and Repower the Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis?A: Safety glasses are essential for air bag module handling because they protect from unintentional air bag deployment when depowering and repowering the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). It is crucial not to probe the air bag module connectors because such activity results in deployment and unsafe conditions. The use of memory saver devices should always remain prohibited. Deploying the SRS becomes necessary before handling any seats equipped with side air bag or safety belt pretensioners. When the ignition turns ON during this process the RCM fuse F4 (10A) removal creates air bag warning lamp illumination but this is an expected behavior without indicating any system faults. A vehicle release depends on full SRS functionality together with no detected faults. All vehicle accessories and ignition switch must first be switched off. Open the kick panel cover at the CJB in the LH instrument panel area and safely remove the RCM fuse F4. Use the ignition to switch ON while checking the air bag indicator lights during a minimum 30-second period. This indicates the removal of the correct fuse was successful if the indicator remains continuously lit. The correct fuse should be removed when no indicator illumination happens. The battery ground cable (14301) should be disconnected to remove power for one minute while turning off the ignition and making sure all auxiliary batteries and power sources get cut off. The procedure for repowering requires complete removal of all diagnostic tools from the restraint systems while connecting all SRS components. Proceed with turning the ignition switch to ON while reinstalling the RCM fuse F4 before securely closing the cover.
