2002 Ford Escort Timing Belt Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the timing belt on 2002 Ford Escort?
A: Service of the timing belt begins with disconnecting the battery ground cable. First disconnect the drive belt followed by the drive belt tensioner and remove three nuts along with three bolts to separate the outer engine front cover from its position. Start by raising and supporting the vehicle before taking off the right-hand engine splash shield. The first step requires removing the crankshaft pulley bolt and timing mark alignment for easy removal using an 8 mm Allen wrench in a counter-clockwise direction. Use a suitable holding tool to secure the timing belt tensioner during inspection of the timing belt for oil contamination. When installing the timing belt start at the crankshaft by aligning its sprockets in a counterclockwise motion while maintaining tight contact between the crankshaft and camshaft span. Attach the timing belt while removing the holding tool to unfreeze the timing belt tensioner. After rotating the crankshaft twice through its total rotation perform a second check of the timing marks. The crankshaft pulley along with the right-hand engine splash shield and vehicle lowering follow. As the final step install the outer engine front cover along with the drive belt tensioner and drive belt before reconnecting the battery ground cable.
