2001 Ford Escort Timing Belt Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the timing belt on 2001 Ford Escort?
A: Service of the timing belt requires starting with the battery ground cable disconnection. Before beginning service on the timing belt professionals need to remove the drive belt together with the drive belt tensioner followed by disconnection of the three nuts and three bolts to separate the outer engine front cover. Support the car from above then use tools to eliminate the right-hand engine splash shield. The crankshaft pulley securing bolt should be removed while aligning timing marks on the engine before you can take out the timing belt. Use an 8 mm Allen wrench by turning it counterclockwise to secure a suitable holding tool which will keep the timing belt tensioner locked prior to removing the timing belt. Check the belt for indicators of oil damage. To mount the timing belt start by placing it around the sprockets in a counterclockwise pattern at the crankshaft and maintain tension across the crankshaft and camshaft areas. After installing the timing belt users must remove the holding tool from the timing belt tensioner. Check timing marks after rotating the crankshaft two complete revolutions. Replace the crankshaft pulley along with the right-hand engine splash shield before completing the process by lowering the vehicle. As the last step install the outer engine front cover and the drive belt tensioner followed by the drive belt and then reconnect the battery ground cable.
