2002 Ford Explorer Seat Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How should you service and repair the power seat switch while ensuring safety when working on an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) on 2002 Ford Explorer?
A: The service and repair of power seat switches should be performed while wearing safety glasses in vehicles with air bag supplemental restraint systems (SRS) to prevent accidental deployment that can cause injuries. You must disable the SRS before starting any work when the seat contains either a seat-mounted air bag or safety belt pretensioner. The process of service and repair for vehicles built up to March 2002 starts with moving the seat forward before extracting fuse F2.28 (10A) from the restraints control module (RCM) contained within the central junction box (CJB) found below the left-hand side of the instrument panel. Upholders assembling from March 2002 backward should take out the RCM fuse F2.19 (10A) from this identical spot in the car. The battery ground cable needs to be disconnected while waiting for one minute as well as discharging any additional auxiliary batteries. Start by prying off the recliner handle and the recliner clip before disconnecting the lumbar adjuster knob and seat backrest recliner handle. Take out the screws from the lumbar adjust mechanism and rear trim as well as lower trim. Pull the front retaining clip of the side trim before removing each cover while being cautious about the mounting tabs to avoid breaking them. The electrical connector of the seat control switch should be disconnected while recording wire harness routing for replacement so you can remove the two screws which secure the switch. Install the new seat control switch by placing it inside the seat side trim panel where you will secure it using the provided two screws before reconnecting the electrical connector according to the noted routing. Attach side trim at its position while checking that every clip locks without needing excessive pressure. Install the two lower screws and the rear mounting screws. Reinstall the screws at the lumbar adjust mechanism before attaching the clip to the recliner handle. Also confirm that the switch harness has the right route. Check the SRS power supply before performing tests on active safety systems.
