2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Shift Interlock Solenoid Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Interlock Solenoid on 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: The first step for servicing and repairing the Brake Shift Interlock Actuator requires users to deplete back up power so that air bag systems do not activate accidentally. Start by disconnecting the battery ground cable and waiting a minimum of one minute and also disconnecting any present auxiliary batteries and power supplies. The first task requires removing the lower steering column opening finish panel by unscrewing it before placing the hood release handle in position. Start by eliminating the two screws from the finish panel while pushing outward to free the retaining clips before removing the panel. You need to remove five bolts which secure the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement before targeting the four nuts which will drop the steering column. Remove the three insert plate and shift lock actuator bolts that hold them to the steering column before disconnecting the electrical connector to extract those components from the column. The shift lock actuator clip works as an assembly tool which does not require a replacement during the installation process. The completion of this process requires reversing the steps used for removal.
