- Q: How to Service and Repair Coil Springs on 2002 Ford F-350 Super Duty?A: You can start servicing or repairing the coil spring of F-250, F-350, and Excursion models by taking out the wheel and tire assembly before using a suitable jack to support the front axle assembly. To start servicing or repairing the coil spring detach the shock from its mounting stud by removing the retaining nut then keeping at bay the upper spring retainer. Use an extension through the spring top to disengage the lower spring retainer before pulling out the front spring when the front axle reaches a position below the upper spring seat. Either new fasteners or the reverse step installation method should be used during assembly. Gas-pressurized shock absorbers require no heat or flame application while removing them. Support the vehicle before taking out the wheel with its tire and then support the front axle again. The front shock absorber lower mount requires removal of its bracket nut and bolt followed by the front spring hanger whose seven flange nut locations need to be noted for correct reinstallation. The procedure requires bolt removal from the two spring hanger bracket positions and flange nut disassembly before proceeding with the five spring hanger bolt removal. Release the bolt and nut which connects the front spring to the spring shackle before removing any necessary spring insulator when it is present. First remove the two U-bolts and four U-bolt nuts from the system before taking off the spring spacer followed by the spring. Remove the front spring hanger by detaching its bolt and nut then taking off the hanger with bracket. To install the part place the spring inside the front spring hanger then mount a new bolt from inside toward the outside before fixing the spring hanger bracket onto the hanger with a new tightened nut. Add the front spring to the spring shackle through hand-tightening of the new bolt and nut. Use new fasteners to install the front spring hanger along with the hanger bracket which must have flange nuts inside the frame rail properly aligned before hand-starting the retaining bolts to avoid cross-threading. The next step involves bolting each component with torque until it reaches specified values then attaching the spring spacer while adding two U-bolts followed by installing four U-bolt retaining nuts before finishing with the front shock lower parts. Insert new lower bolt and nut for the front shock absorber before installing the spring insulator when equipped. After reattaching the wheel with tire assembly, users should lower their vehicle while removing the jack stands. Expand the tires by applying vehicle weight then proceed to tighten the front hanger bolt and nut and afterwards the shackle bolt and nut.
