2002 Ford Taurus Brake Shoe Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the brake shoes on 2002 Ford Taurus?
A: The braking system requires the removal of the brake drum before servicing brake shoes. It is essential to check the rear wheel cylinder and brake shoe components and springs for leaks and contaminants as well as spring discoloration. When any defects are present replace the affected parts. Inspect rear brake shoes until you find adequate thickness above the backing plate or rivets and perform a replacement if necessary. First uninstall the brake shoe adjusting screw spring and proceed to remove the brake adjuster lever and brake adjuster screw. Remove successively the brake shoe hold-down spring and then proceed to take out the brake shoe and its retracting spring and finally the rear brake shoe hold-down spring. Before you separate the rear brake shoes from their attachment to the parking brake lever you should remove them both along with the linings while discarding the parking brake lever clip. You should perform the reverse steps of removal to install.
