2002 Lincoln Blackwood Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable for the Transmission Selector Lever on 2002 Lincoln Blackwood?
A: The service process for transmission selector lever cable repair starts by disconnecting the lower dash panel followed by the removal of specified components for the repair work. The minimal operating procedure to install this cable starts by following the removal process in reverse order. The cable grommet should be pressed through the bulkhead before installation which must include a tight fit against the bulkhead to avoid water entry into the passenger compartment. Adjusting of the shift cable occurs following its installation. Set the range selector lever to position (D) while attaching a weight of three pounds to it. To begin adjustment raise and support the vehicle while disconnecting the transmission shift cable end from the manual control lever and unlock the lock tab on the cable end. Manually shift the control lever to (D) position after which you should advance it to first gear position and two detents to (D) position. Position the transmission shift cable end on the manual control lever before sticking the cable end lock tab. Lower the vehicle while removing the range selector lever weight. The range selector lever should be tested across its full transmission traverse while stopping at each detent so that the park position activates correctly and neutral position activates correctly and reverse lamps verify illumination in reverse position. The adjustment of the transmission range (TR) sensor needs to be redone when a vehicle fails to start in park or neutral positions or vice versa the reverse lamps do not illuminate.
