2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service a non-functional Ignition Lock Cylinder on 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis?
A: The first step for servicing a non-functional ignition switch lock cylinder is disconnecting the battery ground cable and waiting at least one minute. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must be disabled because serious personal injuries will occur unless you take this step first. Transition to servicing the ignition switch lock cylinder by taking out the steering wheel then unscrewing the protective cap. The lock cylinder retaining pin must be drilled out using a 1/8-inch diameter drill bit. A 3/8-inch diameter drill should then be used to drill into the middle of the ignition lock key slot to free up the ignition switch lock cylinder. You should remove the ignition switch lock cylinder along with discarding any drill shavings collected from the steering column. Follow the removal of the bearing retainer by taking out the steering column lock housing bearing and steering column lock gear while thoroughly cleaning all drill shavings from the steering column and checking for damage. The lock gear installation requires positioning its keyhole narrow section at the one o'clock position. The steering column lock gear and bearing installation requires application of Ignition Lock Grease FOAZ-19584-A or an equivalent product that complies with Ford specification ESA-M1C232-A to both components. The keyhole narrow section should face one o'clock position and the tab must face three o'clock position within the bore while performing a counterclockwise rotation. Reinstall the steering wheel before reinstalling the ignition switch lock cylinder while verifying proper operation. During this process use the bearing retainer to position its retention tabs into the lock housing. The process concludes with reactivating Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) once all safety warnings receive proper attention.
