2003 Ford E-150 Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Rear Three-Piece Drive Shaft on 2003 Ford E-150?
A: Service and repair operations of the rear three-piece driveshaft should begin by raising and supporting the vehicle. Start by marking the driveshaft at the axle end before removing it by taking out all bolts and retainer units of the U-joints. Safety mechanics wire must support the driveshaft before disconnecting it from the coupling shaft by replacing all bolts and U-joint retainers with new ones. First remove the support bolts holding the center bearing and discard the rear driveshaft assembly together with the bolts. Start cleaning grease residues and removing dirt and rust from all driveshaft components including driveshaft yoke areas and bearing and rubber insulator of the driveshaft center bearing without submerging them in a solvent. Check the universal joint slip yoke boot for rips along with holes before replacement and inspect the driveshaft center bearing support for signs of wear and rough movement before adding a new support. Check the center bearing rubber insulator for signs of deterioration along with hardening and cracking then replace it when necessary. The front driveshaft installation requires transmission connection through new bolts which should be hand-tightened at first. The center support bearing requires installation after positioning and the bolts need hand-tightening. A proper torque should be placed on both driveshaft parking brake drum bolts and driveshaft center bearing bolts. Install the center support bearing bolts which should receive hand-tightening only at this time. You need to join the assembly of rear driveshaft to front driveshaft via new retainers while bolting them together followed by a similar connection to the rear axle through new retainers bolting. The procedure ends with tightening the driveshaft center support bearing bolts.
