2003 Ford E-150 Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2003 Ford E-150?
A: Beginning the timing cover maintenance requires first disconnecting the ground cable of the battery and removing the water pump. Begin by elevating and supported the automobile before removing the crankshaft pulley next you should disconnect the wiring of the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. Begin by uninstalling a bolt at the front of the oil pan on both its left and right sides before lowering the vehicle. You should first remove three major components: the camshaft synchronizer along with the accessory drive belt idler pulley and the accessory drive belt tensioner. First discard the water pump mounting studs before extracting the crankshaft front oil seal and subsequently separating the front cover with its gasket from the engine block. The removal of stud bolts and hidden cap screw will protect the front cover from damage. Take out the dowels from the front cover combined with its gasket and dispose of the old gasket. The surfaces should be cleaned for gasket sealing but no fiber disk should be used to avoid contamination. The gasket surface that needs RTV application requires treatment with metal surface cleaner while shop towels should be used to cover the exposed oil pan. To install the engine front cover use silicone gasket and sealant for applying a bead at the oil pan block seam before placing the engine front cover gasket beneath a second bead of sealant lining the gasket edge. Set the lowest portion of the cover upon the oil pan before raising it into its proper place. Mount new water pump studs while applying Loctite@ to them before inserting the Loctite@ end within the engine. Install the engine front cover nuts and bolts by tightening first bolt 11 and 13 to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.) then 12 to 25 Nm (89 inch lbs.) followed by an additional 90° torque for bolts 1-11 and 13. Raising the vehicle allows you to install the bolts after reattaching the accessory drive belt tensioner and idler pulley. Engine oil drainage should be followed by CMP sensor wiring reattachment and front crankshaft oil seal as well as crankshaft pulley installation. First lower the vehicle to install the camshaft synchronizer together with the water pump followed by reconnecting the battery ground cable then filling the engine with clean engine oil.
