2003 Ford E-250 Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Should the Air Bag System Be Depowered Before Servicing to Minimize Injury Risk on 2003 Ford E-250?
A: While depowering the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) for servicing purposes you should wear safety glasses to prevent injuries that may arise from accidental air bag deployment. It is dangerous to probe air bag module connectors because manual activation will lead to personal injury and deployment. Avoid using memory saver devices. When a seat has side air bag or safety belt pretensioner components service must begin with SRS depowering. An illumination of the air bag warning lamp happens when removing the ECS module fuse with the ignition switch set to ON but this condition does not mean there's a fault present. A functioning SRS system without faults should always be present before you give back the vehicle to the customer. All vehicle accessories and ignition switch should be switched off before starting. You should remove the cover from the central junction box (CJB) underneath the instrument panel left side to extract the electronic crash sensor (ECS) module fuses F2.19 (10A) and F2.38 (10A). The air bag indicator will stay constant during the 30-second observation period if you remove the correct ESC fuse when the ignition switch is ON. Turn to the replacement of the correct RCM fuse if the indicator does not illuminate. The back up power supply depletion process needs users to disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) while waiting at least one minute while ensuring the removal of auxiliary batteries and other power supplies. Remove all restraint system diagnostic equipment before starting the process of repowering a vehicle. Start by turning the ignition to ON mode while reinstalling both ECS F2.19 (10A) and F2.38 (10A) fuses into the CJB before putting back the cover. You must verify that the vehicle remains empty after checking that no objects block the air bag modules before putting on the battery ground cable. Connect the battery ground cable and conduct SRS prooving by first turning the ignition to ON-OFF mode for 10 seconds before returning to the ON position. When the air bag indicator remains active for six seconds it should extinguish completely. The indicator fails to show any indication of a fault but it also could stay lit while possibly flashing and might produce audible alerts in case of a fault. A scan tool should be used to delete all continuous DTCs from the restraints control module.
