2003 Ford Excursion Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Can You Safely Depower and Repower the Air Bag System on 2003 Ford Excursion?
A: Safety glasses for protection should be worn at all times during air bag module handling because accidental air bag deployment poses a risk of personal injury. Connections on the air bag module must never be probed because this action will activate the air bag and result in personal injuries. The use of memory saver devices must be avoided because they present safety dangers. All seat service operations that include SRS components need active depowering of the SRS system. A warning indicator illuminates in the air bag system when the RCM fuse F2.26 (10A) is extracted with the ignition activated although no defect exists. Disconnect all vehicle accessories as well as the ignition switch from power. Open the central junction box cover beneath the instrument panel on the left side before removing the RCM fuse F2.26. Check the air bag indicator lights remain solid throughout a 30-second period when the ignition is ON if the proper fuse has been removed. Turn off ignition power first then disconnect the ground cable (14301) of the battery and wait at least one minute to drain back up power supplies while ensuring the separate auxiliary battery systems also receive their power cutoff. The SRS components need to remain fully connected while all diagnosis tools must be taken out before reconnection of power. Proceed by turning to ON position and re-inserting the RCM fuse F2.26 inside the CJB while replacing its cover. The vehicle must remain empty and free from any obstruction in front of air bag modules when reconnecting the battery ground cable. Proceed with the SRS prove-out by using the ignition key to change from ON to OFF state and wait for 10 seconds before returning the key to ON position. A continuous illumination of the air bag indicator will last for six seconds followed by its shutdown. During the air bag indicator check the system will either not illuminate when a fault exists or it will keep showing a constant illumination or flash with possible auditory indications of a system error. To resolve SRS faults diagnostic procedures must be conducted leading to module repairs while diagnostic tools need to clear all continuous DTCs present in the restraints control module.
