2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Automatic Transmission Shifter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the automatic transmission shifter on 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: The first step when repairing automatic transmission shifters is to drain back up power to stop uncontrolled air bag activation. Service technicians should disconnect the battery ground cable and wait for one minute while also discharging any auxiliary batteries and power sources if present. Start by removing the lower steering column opening finish panel by extracting its screws while moving the hood release handle to the side and then separating the panel clips with pulling motion. You have to remove five bolts from the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement before tackling the four nuts required for steering column lowering. To obtain access to the ignition switch lock cylinder turn it to the RUN position while pressing the lock cylinder release pin to pull it out. Start by unscrewing three elements from the lower steering column shroud and after that remove the tilt wheel handle and shank (if present) unless otherwise indicated. The upper steering column shroud should be removed followed by disconnecting the TCS harness connector. Unfasten the TCS harness from both locators then disconnect the gearshift lever cover from the steering column. Discarding the old gearshift lever pin is essential before completing removal of the gearshift lever. The installation ends with reversing all removal procedures while taking necessary steps to verify the air bag system.
