A proper service or repair of an automatic transmission shifter begins with backing down the power supply to prevent bag deployment. The first step should involve disconnecting the battery ground wire followed by a one-minute waiting period together with removing any connected auxiliary batteries if present. First detach the lower steering column opening finish panel by unscrewing the fasteners through the hood release handle while pulling out the retaining clips. Strike five bolts from the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement as well as four nuts to let the steering column descend. You can remove the ignition switch lock cylinder by moving the lock to RUN position while pressing the pin and extracting it from the housing. You should next remove the lower steering column shroud but you may need to remove three screws along with the tilt wheel handle. After removing the upper steering column shroud continue with the removal of transmission control switch (TCS) harness connector. The TCS harness needs to be divided from its locators before the gearshift lever cover must be separated from the steering column. The old gearshift lever pin should be discarded before you take out the gearshift lever. The air bag system function testing must be performed after reversing all removal steps to finish the installation.
