2003 Ford Mustang Drive Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Drive Shaft on 2003 Ford Mustang?
A: The first step to service or repair the driveshaft requires vehicle elevation with proper support. A point of reference through indexing should be marked onto the rear axle pinion flange and driveshaft centering socket yoke. You must detach the four bolts which secure the driveshaft. Installation of driveshaft centering socket yokes onto the rear axle pinion flange pilot demands caution because the fit is tight so avoid striking components of the driveshaft through hammering. A proper tool should be applied only to the designated area to free the yoke from the flange. You should lower the driveshaft rear end with care to stop the slip yoke from hitting the transmission output shaft then pull the driveshaft backward until the slip yoke passes the transmission extension housing. Before putting the plug to prevent leakage through the transmission extension housing insert commercially available plugs to the drive shaft slip yoke and transmission output shaft. Both components need to be marked with paint. New bolts should be installed for reassembly but original bolts can be used with threadlock compound and sealer. Placing the slip yoke should avoid contact with the transmission output shaft before tightening the bolts in a cross pattern to achieve proper yoke seating on the flange. All foreign items that remain between the driveshaft's yoke areas should be wiped clean before reinstalling.
