- Q: How to service and repair the rear air shock absorber on 2003 Lincoln Navigator?A: The first step for repairing the rear air shock absorber requires ventilating the air spring with a scan tool. Vehicle lifting or jacking and towing procedures require users to switch off the air suspension control in the LH quarter trim panel to avoid uncontrolled air spring behaviors while working on the vehicle. Pull out the wheel with tire before discarding the used nuts. After disconnecting the electrical connector users should push down on the lock ring between air supply line and quick connect until it releases its grip. The bolt can be removed from the air shock absorber after discarding the flag nut. A hex holding mechanism should be used to prevent the shock rod from rotating during nut removal and discard. The installation requires a new air spring whenever retainer tabs become broken. Before removal create an index mark on both the air spring and the shock absorber which will help during installation while depressing retainer tabs to extract the air spring. The installation requires the removal and discard of the O-ring seal along with the washer and jounce bumper and all O-ring seals. The procedure requires discarding of retainer pins and upper mount in addition to its O-ring seals. A proper press tool should be used to install the upper mount retainer pins while applying a light sheen of grease to new O-ring seals.
