2003 Lincoln Town Car Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft on 2003 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The procedure for axle shaft service and repair starts by placing the vehicle on a hoist and slowly loosening the wheel nuts using no heat techniques. Wheel and rear wheel bearing damage will occur when heat is used. First remove the center cap before using wheeljack pressure to achieve loose wheel nuts. Disable the air suspension switch positioned in the left side of the luggage compartment before performing the procedure to avoid uncontrolled air spring behavior. You must remove the rear wheel with its attached tire by unfastening the wheel nuts. The removal of lubricant from the rear axle housing begins by taking out the 10 differential housing cover bolts followed by the differential housing cover. Detach the rear brake anti-lock sensor before removing the rear brake caliper and brake disc along with supporting the caliper through mechanics wire. The procedure to pull out the differential pinion shaft includes unlocking the bolt before extracting the shaft itself while preserving the rubber O-ring in the U-washer groove during U-washer removal. Position the right axle shaft so that it faces outboard and secure the lock bolt by hand. The removal process for the axle shaft starts with applying even strikes from a thin-blade cold chisel at the flange which will separate the rear brake anti-lock sensor indicator for disposal. Position the rear brake anti-lock sensor indicator on a bearing plate before placing the axle shaft through it until it reaches the bottom of the axle flange. Apply Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or another product that fulfills Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B to the wheel bearing oil seal lip. Follow this step by performing the differential pinion shaft removal process again while maintaining protection of the wheel bearing oil seal throughout the axle shaft installation. Set the U-washer on the axle shaft button end while pulling it out to glide into sidegear contact. Fix the differential pinion shaft into position by guiding its hole through the lock bolt hole and bolt it tight. Attach the brake disc together with brake caliper before installing the rear brake anti-lock sensor. Place the differential housing cover in position before adding specified fluid between its elements. Perform wheel mounting surface cleansing to eliminate corrosion and dirt for wheel nut integrity. The completion involves fitting your wheel and tire assembly and center cap as well as restarting air suspension systems through switching on the air suspension control before lowering the vehicle.
