  • Q: How Can You Safely Remove and Reinstall the Rear Axle Shaft and Related Components with Air Springs on 2004 Lincoln Town Car?
    A: The vehicle requires shutdown of rear air spring electrical power before hoisting or jacking or towing by enabling the air suspension switch in the LH side of the luggage compartment to stop unwanted air spring operation. After removing the rear brake caliper and brake disc you must support the caliper with mechanics wire while setting aside the rear brake anti-lock sensor together with its bolt and sensor. The next step involves removing the differential housing cover through the process of removing 10 bolts then draining the lubricant from the rear axle housing. Working with the differential pinion shaft requires extra attention because turning the differential case or an axle shaft might cause pinion gears to drop out leading to possible damage. Remove the differential pinion shaft and its lock bolt first and then acquire the U-washer with attention to preserve the rubber O-ring present in the groove. Insert the differential pinion shaft by pushing the axle shaft towards the vehicle exterior then add the shaft before tightening the lock bolt gently. The user must verify that the wheel bearing oil seal remains undamaged throughout the axle shaft removal sequence. The lip of the wheel bearing oil seal requires Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or another product that complies with Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B before reinstalling the differential pinion shaft through the original removal procedure. Put the axle shaft in position alongside the U-washer placed on the button end then extend the shaft until it rests properly in the side gear. Position the lock bolt hole on the differential pinion shaft with the matching hole and fasten the lock bolt. To complete the installation, position the differential housing cover using bolts then reinstall the rear brake anti-lock sensor together with the brake disc.
