2003 Lincoln Town Car Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2003 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The servicing and repairs on the timing cover begin by disconnecting the battery cable and following with the removal of valve covers and the water pump. Position the power steering pump to the side then take out all bolts before supporting the vehicle with a lift. The drain of engine oil requires you to remove the oil pan drain plug before removing four bolts to lower the vehicle. Move on to the crankshaft front seal along with its bolt and then detach the belt idler pulley. The correct sequence of bolt removal is required while being careful about the sealing surface to avoid creating scratches that can start leaks because we must never use metal scrapers or abrasive tools here. A plastic scraping tool should be used for complete removal of gasket material while using a plastic scraper in combination with metal surface cleaner to clean the gasket surfaces. The engine front cover must be installed within four minutes as per specifications to avoid sealant removal and cleaning of the sealing area with metal surface cleaner before complete drying. Sealant should be applied between the cylinder head and block surface and also between the oil pan and block surface before installing the engine front cover with its dowels while leaving the bolts slightly loose. Begin by tightening front cover bolts and stud bolts from 1 to 7 while reaching 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs) torque. After that, torque fasteners 6 through 15 to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs). After installation of the bolt on the belt idler pulley you should position a new crankshaft front seal. The front oil pan bolts should be loosely installed before raising torque to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) while adding 60 degrees to the final tightness measure. The technician installs the power steering pump bolts before adding the oil pan drain plug then lowers the vehicle to install valve covers and water pump. The last step includes reconnecting the battery ground cable then filling engine oil.
