2004 Lincoln Town Car Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the engine front timing cover on 2004 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The repair and servicing process for engine front covers begins with disconnecting the battery ground cable followed by water pump and both valve covers removal. Secure the vehicle on a lift system then unfasten all bolts from the power steering unit so that you can move the pump out of the way. The oil pan drain plug should be removed for draining engine oil while four bolts allow the vehicle to lower itself. You must first remove the crankshaft front seal together with its bolt and the belt idler pulley. Begin removal of specified bolts together with stud bolts in order to clean sealing surfaces without metal scrapers or abrasive tools; instead use a plastic scraping tool to eliminate all gasket material traces. You should scrape the gasket surfaces clean using both a plastic tool and metal cleaning solution. The engine front cover needs to be secured before four minutes or else the sealant must be removed and the sealing area must be cleaned with metal surface cleaner and left to dry for four minutes or until all wetness disappears to avoid further oil leakage. Sealant needs to be applied on both cylinder head-to-block and oil pan-to-cylinder block surfaces before installation of the engine front cover through its front cover-to-cylinder block dowel and subsequent loose bolt installation. The front cover bolt installation requires two fastener stages. Begin with bolts 1 through 7 to a torque of 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.), then move to bolts 6 through 15 and torque them to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Manual belt idler pulley positioning happens before screwing in the bolt for a new installation of the crankshaft front seal. The vehicle frame should be raised once more to install front oil pan bolts loosely before tightening in two stages at 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) first and then advancing an additional 60 degrees. Fasten power steering pump bolts then insert the oil pan drain plug but keep the vehicle on stands before restoring valve covers and water pump. The procedure ends with reconnecting the battery ground cable as you fill the engine with oil.
