2004 Ford Crown Victoria Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Engine Front Timing Cover on 2004 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: The procedure to repair or service the engine front cover starts with disconnecting the battery ground cable followed by removal of both valve covers and water pump. Lift the vehicle and sustain it using stands while you take out all the bolts to move the power steering pump to the side. The engine oil service requires the oil pan drain plug removal followed by the removal of four bolts and the lowering of the vehicle. The first step is to remove the crankshaft front oil seal together with the bolt and the belt idler pulley. Follow the specified order for bolt removal while using a plastic tool instead of scratching away gasket material with metal scrapers. Perform surface cleaning with a plastic tool and metal surface cleaning products only. Scrape the gasket surfaces using a plastic tool followed by application of metal surface cleaner. You need to remove the sealants from the sealing area when the engine front cover takes longer than four minutes to secure it after cleaning the areas with metal surface cleaner until complete dryness. Sealant must be applied on the cylinder head-to-block contact while the oil pan-to-cylinder block interface and then the engine front cover can be placed on its dowel and bolts should be installed loosely. Begin by tightening front cover bolts and stud bolts from 1 to 7 to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.), followed by tightening fasteners 6 through 15 to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) in a second stage. First position the belt idler pulley while installing the bolt before placing a new front oil seal on the crankshaft. Support the vehicle again before installing the front oil pan bolts loosely. Conduct two-stage tightening by applying first 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) torque and then turning them 60 degrees further. The front lower hole of the power steering pump is unneeded so install the pump in its correct position then bolt it down. After reattaching and lowering the vehicle users should finish the installation process by plugging the drain pan followed by valve covers and water pump installation. After finishing reattachment of the battery ground cable you must fill the engine with the correct amount of oil.
