2004 Ford E-150 Differential Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the differential cover on Dana 60 and 70 on 2004 Ford E-150?
A: Before servicing and repairing the differential cover of Dana 60 and 70 vehicles start by elevating the vehicle on a hoist or jack-raised rear end then support it with safety stands underneath the frame rails and lower hoist or jack to achieve working clearance during the rebound position. Pull the differential housing cover off and empty the lubricating fluid from both the housing components. Eliminate all gasket residue from both hardware items. Use an appropriate solvent to clean all surfaces on both the differential housing cover and the differential housing so oil film does not remain. The differential housing cover that needs silicone rubber sealant needs its gasket installed with a continuous silicone bead to the mounting surface within 15 minutes to prevent the need for fresh sealant. Install the differential housing cover starting with two bolts at eight and two o'clock positions as positioning guides and finally add remaining bolts while tightening them with alternating order and even torque sequence. The perquisite torque value for Grade 5 bolts is 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) whereas Grade 8 bolts need a torque of 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). A one-hour cure time must precede the filling procedure of the specified lubricant amount into the axle. Subsequently lower the vehicle.
